The musical is a Brechtian allegory of corruption and corporate greed. Set in "Steeltown, USA", it follows the efforts of Larry Foreman to unionize and otherwise combat wicked businessman Mr. Mister. Blitzstein portrays a whole panoply of societal figures: Mr. Mister's vicious, outwardly genteel philanthropic wife and spoiled children, sell-out artists, poor shopkeepers, immigrant families, a faithless priest, and an endearing prostitute named Moll. The piece is almost entirely sung-through, giving it many operatic qualities, although Blitzstein (as he often did, even in his full-blown operas) included popular song styles of the time.

My Fair Lady~May 8th

Gone Missing is a wry and whimsical documentary musical about things that go missing -- keys, personal identification, a Gucci pump...or one's mind. The show is a collection of very personal accounts of things lost and found, creating a unique tapestry of the ways in which we deal with and relate to loss in our lives.

The Civilians’ Gone Missing is a wildly funny and marvelously inventive meditation on things “gone missing”, combining elements of performance art, documentary theater, and musicals. A flexible company of six performs more than thirty characters, intertwining their stories of lost objects with tales from some unusual "finders," ranging from a retired NYPD cop to a pet psychic.

It features music and lyrics by up-and-coming composer Michael Friedman incorporating salsa, ballads, operetta and pop.
In just 80 minutes, Hudes tells the stories of three men and a woman who go to war, and she weaves those stories in and out of one another until they become one. One story begins and another echoes it and takes it farther, the way a fugue develops a line of music. Yet the stories these characters tell will make you push all thoughts of metaphor aside.
And Mad Cow’s production, directed with great precision and sensitivity by Patrick Braillard, does all it can to bring this heady piece down to earth.

Take the opening scene, in which a brawny Marine recruit (Michael Kutner) preens in an imaginary mirror before shipping off to Iraq. Or when a woman veteran (Jenny Weaver), a soldier’s mother, speaks fiercely about the garden she is planting: “When your son goes to war, you plant every [expletive] seed you can find,” she says. “It doesn’t matter what it is.”

Hudes, a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for this play (and writer of the book for this year’s Tony-winning musical In the Heights), winds those two stories through the stories of two others, a man who fights in Vietnam (Benjamin Rush) and one who fights in Korea (Dave Heuvel). That the men turn out to be three generations of the same family seems inevitable, but more interesting is the fact that they become like three facets of the same man.

In the hands of Braillard and his actors, they’re each right for their particular era, and you remember each for his singularities: Heuvel’s youthful innocence; Rush’s dark, haunted eyes; Kutner’s bravado and his grin. Weaver, too, makes an impression with a no-nonsense daytime manner that morphs into sensuality at night.

Elliot takes no sides in the dispute over war, but Hudes’ impressions remain — the soldier remembering the first time he killed a man, then finding on the body a photo of the man’s wife and kids. It’s a chilling image but also an intimate one: This young playwright brings all wars home.
